​Who am I?

​

My name is Matt, I was born and raised in Durban, South Africa. I have been in the yachting industry for 11 years and hold a Chief Mate 3000gt certification. I am currently a Chief Officer onboard a 62m super yacht and still working in the industry - I work on a rotational contract on my vessel, rotating with my partner 6 weeks on, 6 weeks off. During my time off I lecture at various yachting schools around KZN on a contractual basis. I have a substantially large network base within the yachting industry and have built solid relationships over the last decade with recruiting agents, yacht managers, owners, captains, chief officers, chief stews, bankers, cellular network providers, specialized Seafearer tax consultants, bond originators and financial advisors.

I enjoy surfing, riding dirt bikes, diving and all things that get the adrenaline pumping!

Why did I start 'Ocean Compass'? 

​

​I founded this company to provide people with the one-on-one support they need to navigate their way through unchartered territories, especially those who are young and untravelled. Going overseas with access to limited funds and having no idea when your next pay check will be, can be a very daunting task. Before founding this company I often found myself getting calls from friends, friends of friends, and even concerned mothers of people I had never even met before asking for advice and support regarding almost every aspect of yachting - Banking, Sim cards, Visa's, Spending money, accommodation, dock walking, CV editing, courses, bond applications when dealing with foreign income, Taxes - the list is endless. Only after 11 years of going through this all myself, I have now established solid foundations and a knowledge base to which I can confidently share and help set you up for success in your new career without breaking the bank. The yachting industry is saturated with green crew all looking for their first job and a lot of people go home empty handed, mostly due to being fed incorrect information on how this niche industry actually works. I am passionate about what I do, and my objective is to ensure that you can cross that finish line by securing your first yacht job , without all the bumps and bruises that most people have to endure on their journey.
